Erik Erikson was a man
Who taught about the mind
Trying to find solutions
To enlighten our conflicted kind

Some say drop the ego
It can be the enemy
Perhaps it serves a purpose
To bring us unity

We have simple desire
This surely is the truth
We have a moral compass
It’s hard to show the proof

The ego sits between them
It minds the conflicted path
To protect the fragile psyche
And contain the source of wrath

We make mistakes and foibles
On this it can be clear
Acceptance with grace and wisdom
Freedom from despair

We try to mend and fix
We hope to learn and grow
The past has passed us by
Mind won’t easily let go

To accept our situation
Bring together varied states
Enjoy the fruits of labor
With gratitude for our fates
